HAZEL (TERRY) IRENE SMITH (nee SLY) Peacefully after a lengthy battle with emphysema, Hazel (Terry) Irene Smith passed away on Friday, December 22, 2000 at Grace General Hospital in her 76th year. She will be lovingly remembered by her five children, Gaye Szeszycki (Jack) of Ottawa, Ontario, Joan Ilavsky (John) of Port Moody, B.C., Sharon Powers (Joe) of Holland Landing, Ontario, Brent Smith (Debbie) of Newmarket, Ontario, and Don Smith of Ottawa, Ontario; and by her ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will also be greatly missed by her surviving brothers and sisters, Florence, Elwood, Thelma, Wilma, Shirley, Eric, and their families. She also had many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Raymond, her mother Violet Sly, and her father Andrew Sly. Terry was born on October 25, 1924 in Neepawa, Manitoba moving to Winnipeg as a teenager with her family. She was stationed there during the Second World War. She raised her five children in Regina, Winnipeg, and Thornhill until returning back to Winnipeg. Terry was a dedicated mother and loving grandmother. Her home was a welcoming place filled with laughter and plentiful goodies for all her grandchildren. Her wit and storytelling will be greatly missed. A celebration of Hazels life will be held on Saturday, January 13 from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at The Holiday Inn Airport West, in The Chateau Room. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the care she was given at Deer Lodge Centre during these difficult last months and to the staff at Grace Hospital for their care and support during her last few days. A special thank you goes to her Winnipeg family members who have been there to help her in so many ways over the last few years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 0L3, Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3A 1P6, or a charity of your choice.
